The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will host eight unique one day summer camps for children ages 4-12. Starting Wednesday, July 7^th and ending Thursday, August 26^th, each Camp for a Day session will run from 10am to 2pm.

Camp for a Day offers a fun-filled day of camp activities without the long term commitment. Campers will learn about different aspects of history and participate in a variety of hands-on craft projects based on the Museum’s exhibits. Camp themes include the Lenape: Tools & Daily Living exhibit, jewelry making, puppets, arts and crafts with recycled items, textiles, a Colonial tea party and much more.

Campers may pick and choose as many camp sessions as they please.

JULY:

Lenape: Toys & Games - Wednesday, July 7^th

Tour the exhibit Lenape: Tools & Daily Living and learn about how the Lenape people lived, worked and played. Campers will have the opportunity to play with a number of Lenape games and toys, and make some of their own to take home.

Fabric Fun - Thursday, July 15^th

Take part in a variety of crafts and activities using fibers and fabric. Using real lamb’s wool, learn the old-time art of wool-felting, and make a felted toy. View the Museum’s displayed textiles and work with quilt pieces. Other activities include fabric collages, and making dream pillows and a braided rug.

Bejeweled - Tuesday, July 20^th

Design your own pieces of unisex jewelry from a number of “found” objects brought in from home, and from a variety of materials from the Museum’s collection.

Puppets & Plays - Wednesday, July 28^th

Campers will meet the Museum’s staff of puppets and will create several of their own using a variety of materials. Participants will end the day with a puppet show. Campers are asked to bring in a “stray” sock for a sock puppet.

AUGUST:

Lenape: Stories & Tales - Thursday August 5^th

Children will hear a number of riveting Lenape stories and will create some themselves. They will fill their own hand-made books with their stories, Lenape vocabulary and artwork.

Early American 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Tuesday, August 10^th

Learn how Colonials didn’t waste a thing, reusing supplies efficiently. Create a variety of crafts from recycled materials.

Lenape: Toys & Games - Wednesday, August 18^th

Tour the exhibit Lenape: Tools & Daily Living and learn about how the Lenape people lived, worked and played. Campers will have the opportunity to play with a number of Lenape games and toys. A reprise of the popular July 7th camp.

Dolly & Me Tea Party - Thursday, August 26^th

Campers and their favorite dolly are invited to a tea party at the Museum, where they will participate in a number of hands-on activities, and make their own tea for their tea party.

Campers are asked to bring a bag lunch, sun screen and extra drinks if hot out. Activities are both outside and inside the Museum.

Anyone under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Members: $25 for any 1 session and $65 for any 3. Non-Members: $30 for any 1 session and $80 for any 3 sessions.

DUGAN'S HOOLIGANS

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites visitors to enjoy an afternoon of spirited Celtic music on Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m. with the Celtic eclectic family ensemble, Dugan’s Hooligans.

The group features two talented young people, Connor, 18, the group’s fiddler, and Sharlys, 16, a harpist, tin whistle player, vocalist and dancer.

Connor, in addition to winning the North Atlantic Irish fiddle championship a number of times, has also held one or more additional championships in Bluegrass, Celtic or Old Time fiddling. He’s a member of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, the New Jersey Concert Opera orchestra, and plays in a classical octet. Both have, in the past, been members of the N.J. Youth Symphony family of ensembles. Sharlys is a three-time North Atlantic Irish harp champion, sings beautifully in English and Gaelic and has recently come out with her own solo CD.

Rounding out the group is Nancy, the mom, who plays piano, and harp and Dad George who is the percussionist for the group.

They describe their music as spirited, tightly woven, and containing intricate melodies with a Celtic thread running through them. Much of American and Canadian music is based upon Celtic music. So, while the group’s sound is certainly Celtic, the parameters are sometimes wide, yet always fun and exciting.

Dugan’s Hooligans is entertainment for all ages and all musical tastes. If there’s even a drop of Celtic blood in you, you will most certainly feel the primordial stirrings in your bones of an earlier time as it meets the present.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover, Wednesday, March 31st 4 - 5 PM - Thursday, April 1st Regular Hours
Bring your favorite stuffed animal or doll for a sleepover on Tuesday, March 31st. Enjoy a snack and story time with your toy and then tuck them in to spend the night at the Museum. Come back on Wednesday, April 1st between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm to pick up your stuffed animal, make a craft and find out what mischief they have gotten into during the night! Appropriate for children 2-6 years old. The Lenape or Delaware Indians, Sunday, May 2nd 2 PM
Meet John T. Kraft as he examines the Lenape Indian way of life in New Jersey with a slide-illustrated lecture, which includes folklore, prehistoric artifacts, traditional clothing, arts and crafts, musical instruments and weapons. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Space is limited. You are invited to visit more than a dozen historic sites and museums throughout Morris County FREE of charge on “Be Our Guest” Day. In celebration of National Tourism Week, the sites are opening their doors and waiving their usual admission fees, although guests are encouraged to contribute a non-perishable food item for donation to the local Food Pantry in lieu of the normal admission fee.
