Ken Olsen & the American Folk Art Tradition
In the new exhibit, Whimsies: Ken Olsen & the American Folk Art Tradition,
visitors will be delighted by the artistic and amusing creations of artist/craftsman Ken Olsen (1921-2010). Designed in a traditional American Folk Art style, his pieces will come to life and fascinate patrons of all ages.
A longtime resident of Madison, New Jersey, Ken Olsen, was inspired by his 18th century house and its Americana décor. His pieces, which he referred to as “whimsies,” were deeply rooted in the American Folk Art tradition and were made with the intention to bring entertainment to its viewer. His creations followed such traditional folk themes as whirligigs, signs, and patriotic figures. His works also celebrated the founding fathers, his own family, nature, story telling and modern day themes.
This exhibit pays respect to the work of Ken Olsen and lightheartedly explores its historical precedents.
Throughout the exhibit’s duration, various public programs, events and activities will take place. Whimsies: Ken Olsen & the Folk Art Tradition will be open to the public until Sunday, January 15th.
