As a thank you to those in the Armed Forces and their families, METC will once again participate in the Blue Star Museum program.  This is a free admission program available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention Common Access Card (CAC), A DD Form 1173 ID Card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID Card, which includes active duty military and their immediate family members, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve.

Crafters Corner, Workshops for Adults

On Sunday, May 20^th at 2 pm the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will host an adult craft workshop series call Crafters Corner. 

Join artist and Educator, Rachel Prager as she teaches attendees how to be creative with t-shirts.  Participants will learn how to make their own fashionable t-shirt scarf and flowers.

Each session of Crafters Corner will feature a different craft project.  Participants will create unique, one-of-a-kind crafts that they can take home. 

Open to ages 16 and up.  Space is limited.  Pre-registration required.   

Admission is $15 for Non-members & $10 for Members (includes all supplies & Museum admission).

Rug Hooking Workshop

Saturday, May 19^th 2 PM

Learn the art of rug hooking with skilled fiber artist Susan Hoekstra, owner of Foxview Needlepoint & Rug Hooking of Long Valley. Participants will go home with a finished piece.

Attendees are to bring an 8” embroidery hoop. All other supplies will be provided. Space is limited. Pre-registration required by Saturday, May 5^th. Admission is $50 for non-members & $45 for Members. Call 973-377-2982 x14 to register.

Summer Camp for a Day

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will host eight unique one day summer camps for children ages 7-12. Camp will take place Tuesday, July 10^th - Wednesday, August 29^th. Each Camp for a Day session will run from 10am to 2pm.

Camp for a Day offers a fun-filled day of camp activities without the long term commitment. Campers will learn about different aspects of history and participate in a variety of hands-on craft projects based on the Museum’s exhibits.

Campers may pick and choose as many camp sessions as they please. Camps fill quickly, so sign-up today!

July’s Dates & Themes:

Caleb the Carpenter Tuesday, July 10^th - Participants will learn about Caleb Burroughs, a carpenter who lived in Madison from 1799-1885, and all the tools he used. Campers will then learn how to use tools to make a variety of wood and "found object" crafts.

Pirate Adventure Day, Wednesday, July 18^th - Campers will have fun being a pirate for the day. Participants will learn about the life of a pirate and get to take part in a number of pirate themed activities including games and crafts.

A Patchwork of History, Thursday, July 26^th - Campers will learn the art of quilting and learn about quilts that were made by Early Americans, slaves, and Americans today. Crafts will include various quilt-making activities.

The 3 R's--Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Tuesday, July 31^st - Campers will learn about the importance of recycling--even in Early American times--and make a variety of crafts with recycled and "found" objects.

August’s Dates & Themes:

Griffins, Gargoyles & Dragons, Wednesday, August 8^th - Campers will tour the Museum building to see the gargoyles on the roof, the griffin in the garden, and the dragon in the Main Gallery fireplace. After learning about these mythological creatures, participants will take part in a variety of activities including, making dragons, recreating (kinesthetically) a dragon, and artistically rendering their own original mythological creatures.

Material Matters Thursday, August 16^th - An exploration of weaving and textile arts. Campers will view the current exhibit Spinning Tales: The Fabric of New Jersey and use a variety of materials to create fabulous one-of-a-kind art and textile pieces.

You've Been Framed!, Tuesday, August 21^st - As campers near summer's end, learning about frames and making a variety of frame crafts is a perfect way to preserve the season's memories. Campers are encouraged to bring photos for framing.

Dolly & Me Tea Party Wednesday, August 29^th - Bring your dolly and treat her to an afternoon tea. Campers will learn about Colonial dolls and will make a variety of crafts, including spoon dolls, placemats and decorative fans. The day will end with games and a lovely tea party.

Campers are asked to bring a bag lunch, sun screen and extra drinks if hot out. Activities are both outside and inside the Museum.

Members: $25 for any 1 session and $65 for any 3. Non-Members: $30 for any 1 session and $80 for any 3 sessions.

Passover Program

Wednesday, April 4^th 3:30 - 5:00 PM

The Museum is presenting a Passover program for children ages 6 - 12. Come learn about Passover traditions, make Passover-related crafts, and hear Passover stories.

Lucky Leprechaun Day!

Friday, March 16^th
3 PM - 4PM

Everyone’s Irish for the Day at the Museum. Learn about Irish history, join in various crafts and activities and enjoy some yummy refreshments. Appropriate for ages 5-10 years old.

Pysanky Workshop

Saturday, March 24^th
Workshops at 10:00am or 2:00pm

Join artist and Museum educator Marie Seilus as she teaches the unique techniques used to create the traditional Ukrainian egg decorating art form known as Pysanky. Meaning “to write,” Pysanky uses melted bees wax to write on dyed egg shells to create brightly colored and intricate designs and patterns. Attendees will get a hands-one experience as they learn how to properly use a “kistka” or stylus. Learning the correct order of which the dyes must be used, participants will also discover how to make various symbolic designs. All attendees will create a colorful egg masterpiece to take home.

All supplies will be provided. Open to ages 8 and up. Pre-registration required! Participants may sign-up for either workshop.
