There are only 3 more sessions of Summer Camp for a Day left at the Museum. Geared for children ages 7-12, each camp session will run from 10am to 2pm.

Camp for a Day offers a fun-filled day of camp activities without the long term commitment. Campers will learn about different aspects of history and participate in a variety of hands-on craft projects based on the Museum’s exhibits.

Campers are asked to bring a bag lunch, sun screen and extra drinks if hot out. Activities are both outside and inside the Museum.

Material Matters Thursday, August 16th
An exploration of weaving and textile arts. Campers will view the current exhibit Spinning Tales: The Fabric of New Jersey and use a variety of materials to create fabulous one-of-a-kind art and textile pieces.

You've Been Framed!, Tuesday, August 21st
As campers near summer's end, learning about frames and making a variety of frame crafts is a perfect way to preserve the season's memories. Campers are encouraged to bring photos for framing.

Dolly & Me Tea Party Wednesday, August 29th
Bring your dolly and treat her to an afternoon tea. Campers will learn about Colonial dolls and will make a variety of crafts, including spoon dolls, placemats and decorative fans. The day will end with games and a lovely tea party.

Members: $25 for any 1 session and $65 for any 3. Non-Members: $30 for any 1 session and $80 for any 3 sessions.

Ginny Johnston & Mosaic to Perform for the Downtown Concert Series

 Friday August 3rd

6-8pm

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites guests to the Downtown Concert Series, presented by The Arts Council of the Morris Area, the Madison Downtown Development Commission, Investors Bank, Star Ledger and The Rotary Club of Madison featuring the folk rock group, Ginny Johnston & Mosaic.

Ginny Johnston & Mosaic fuses the soul of folk music with the rhythms and energy of rock to create a unique contemporary sound featuring original and cover songs.

 Performing in the New Jersey area as a solo artist, duo, and with Mosaic since 1993, singer/songwriter Johnston has played in a variety of settings including “First Night” New Year’s celebrations, outdoor events, festivals, coffeehouses, cafes, colleges, cable TV and private events.  Her songs have drawn comparisons to such songwriters as Joni Mitchell and Shawn Colvin.  The members of Mosaic are guitarist & banjo player Donald Bowen (from Madison NJ), drummer & percussionist Dan DeRienzo (from Summit NJ), and bassist Bob Funesti (from New Milford NJ).  Ginny’s husband, keyboardist Dan Crisci, often joins Mosaic, allowing the group’s range of styles to include standards, oldies, blues, rock and pop.

Dolly & Me Tea Party Camp

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will host unique one day summer camps for children ages 7-12.  Each Camp for a Day session will run from 10am to 2pm.

Campers may pick and choose as many camp sessions as they please.

July’s Dates & Themes:

 

A Patchwork of History,  Thursday, July 26^th

Campers will learn the art of quilting and learn about quilts that were made by Early Americans, slaves, and Americans today.  Crafts will include various quilt-making activities. 

The 3 R's--Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,  Tuesday, July 31^st

Campers will learn about the importance of recycling--even in Early American times--and make a variety of crafts with recycled and "found" objects.

August’s Dates & Themes:

Griffins, Gargoyles & Dragons,  Wednesday, August 8^th

Campers will tour the Museum building to see the gargoyles on the roof, the griffin in the garden, and the dragon in the Main Gallery fireplace.  After learning about these mythological creatures, participants will take part in a variety of activities including, making dragons, recreating (kinesthetically) a dragon, and artistically rendering their own original mythological creatures.

Mara & Bitter Suite to Perform for the Downtown Concert Series

Friday, July 20^th 

6-8pm

On Friday, July 20^th from 6-8pm the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites guests to the Downtown Concert Series, presented by The Arts Council of the Morris Area, the Madison Downtown Development Commission, Investors Bank, Star Ledger and The Rotary Club of Madison featuring indie folk rock band, Mara & Bitter Suite.

Composer and Conductor Adam Waite and Broadway actress/singer Mara Davi met while recording Broadway's Carols for a Cure in 2006.  After collaborating on multiple concerts for Birdland, Ars Nova, and Lyrica Chamber Orchestra, they decided it was time to write their own music and find their own sound.  In the fall of 2011, they asked their friends to join in on the fun and get in the recording studio. They became Mara and the Bitter Suite. Their first album will be released early summer 2012.

Spinning Wheel Demonstration

On Saturday, July 21^st at 2 pm the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts presents an interactive historic spinning demonstration with spinner Claire Marinello.

 How would Rumpelstiltskin have spun straw into gold?  Spinning may seem magical, but in reality, it’s what put the clothes on your back in Early America.  Join us for an interactive living history demonstration of the historical process that creates thread.  Watch Claire in action on her castle spinning wheel.

 Claire Marinello has been spinning since she was 13-years-old. Her interest stems from a chance encounter with a spinner in the lobby of a Vermont department store. During that meeting she thought spinning “looked like magic.” As a spinner, she herself now creates magic through spinning demonstrations. Marinello has presented programs for both the Montville and Wayne Historical Societies.  As a history major she has studied the influence of textile manufacture through history.

Ice Cream Social

Family Fun Day, Ice Cream Social at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts

Saturday, July 14^th

 1 pm - 3 pm

 

On Saturday, July 14^th from 1 pm to 3 pm the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will host its poplar Family Fun Day, Ice Cream Social.  

Bring the family for an afternoon of yummy treats, hands-on activities and face painting.  Attendees will have the opportunity to create their own ice cream sundae with delicious ice cream and toppings from McCools Ice Cream Parlour.  Afterwards, visitors can get their face painted and play a variety of games both inside and out on the lawn of the Museum.
