The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts
will host eight unique one day summer camps for children ages 7-12.
Camp will take place Tuesday, July 9th - Wednesday, August 28th. Each
Camp for a Day session will run from 10am to 2pm.
DATES & THEMES:
Camp #1 - Tuesday, July 9 - Caleb the Carpenter
Campers
will learn about early Madison resident Caleb Burroughs (1799-1885), a
carpenter & cabinet maker. They will examine the tools of the
trade Caleb practiced, learn how to use a variety of different tools,
and make several crafts with wood and other materials.
Camp #2 - Wednesday, July 17 - The Work of Play, Part I
Campers
will tour the current exhibit of Early American toys and games,
comparing how Early American people's recreation with play activities of
today. They will play with toys, make toys to take home, and create
games of their own.
Camp #3 - Thursday, July 25 - Spinning Tales
Campers
will learn the importance of fabric and fabric crafts both during
Early American times and today. After learning about the tools
associated with spinning and weaving, they will meet a guest presenter
who will demonstrate the craft of spinning. Other craft activities will
include quilting, rug-braiding and weaving.
Camp #4 - Wednesday, July 31 - Sand, Sea & Shells
Campers
will engage in a variety of activities connected with a maritime
theme, including decoding nautical flags, sailors' lore and crafts
including sand and shells.
Camp #7 - Tuesday, August 20 -Bookin' It
Campers
will learn the importance of books for all ages, and how books were
originally made. They will tour the Museum's printing press exhibit to
learn about early information reproduction, and will make a variety of
personal books, from original folios to creative and different shape
books. Practicing the style of our forefathers, they will write in
their books with real quill pens.Camp #5 - Wednesday, August 7 -What's Cookin'?
Campers
will examine artifacts from the Museum's collection that deal with
food processing and preparation. They will also churn their own butter
and create their own herbal tea recipes to taste at an end of the day
party to which the adults are invited. Other crafts include making a
personal cookbook.
Camp #6 - Thursday, August 15 - The Work of Play, Part II
Since
one can never have enough fun playing, this popular camp will be
repeated, with additional toys and games. They will also be some of the
last visitors to see the "Work of Play" exhibit before it closes at the
end of August.
Camp #8 - Wednesday, August 28 - Dolly & Me Tea Party
Campers
are invited to bring their favorite doll (or bear, or dinosaur, or
...) to the Museum to learn about dolls, food preparation, and
Victorian manners. They will make a variety of dolls and action figures
and end the day with a real tea party, to which the adults are
invited.
Camp for a Day
offers a fun-filled day of camp activities without the long term
commitment. Campers will learn about different aspects of history and
participate in a variety of hands-on craft projects based on the
Museum's exhibits.
Campers may pick and choose as many camp sessions as they please.
