Working Men's Clothes in New Jersey and the Atlantic World, 1750-1825

On Thursday, June 6^th at 6pm, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites visitors to, Working Men's Clothes in New Jersey and the Atlantic World, 1750-1825, presented by presented by Tyler Putman of the University of Delaware.  This talk will examine the clothing of sailors and laborers in New Jersey and abroad using written records, visual depictions, and surviving garments. By focusing primarily on urban and maritime workers, it will show how poor men used their limited resources to buy useful garments as well as participate in a fashion network unique to their social level.  Advance registration recommended, call 973-377-2982 x13.  Regular Admission.

 

 

In the Revolutionary Style

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites visitors to discover what was "IN" and what was "OUT" in 18^th Century fashion with clothing historian Pat Sanftner on Wednesday, May 15^th at 7pm.

Explore the style changes during the 1700's and the fashion mavens that made them happen.  Complete with period dress and costume changes, Pat will reveal the truly fascinating history of a subject we all love to get in to. 

Pat Sanftner has her Master of fine arts from NYU School of the Arts, where she studied Theatrical design, in particular, costume design.  For the last thirty years she has made her living working on Broadway in television and film; for such shows as “The Sopranos” and “One Life to Live” For more than a decade, she has been a professor at Marymount Manhattan College where she teaches the next generation of young designers.  In addition she has curated a number of exhibitions in two of Morristown’s museums, Morris County Historical Society, at Acorn Hall, and Schuyler-Hamilton House; where she is currently the director.  Her dedication to her community and to history has manifested itself by being the Regent of the Morristown DAR twice and a member of the Washington Assn, and Morristown Historical Society.  In addition she is a nationally recognized doll artist and an avid crafter.

Pysanky Workshop

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites visitors to learn the ancient art form known as Pysanky during a Pysanky workshop on Saturday, April 20^th at 10:00am or 2:00pm.

 Join artist and educator Marie Seilus as she teaches the unique techniques used to create the traditional Ukrainian egg decorating art form known as Pysanky.  Meaning “to write,” Pysanky uses melted bees wax to write on dyed egg shells to create brightly colored and intricate designs and patterns.  Attendees will get a hands-one experience as they learn how to properly use a “kistka” or stylus.  Learning the correct order of which the dyes must be used, participants will also discover how to make various symbolic designs.  All attendees will create a colorful egg masterpiece to take home.

 All supplies will be provided.  Open to ages 8 and up.  Pre-registration required!  Participants may sign-up for either workshop.

Read Across America Day

Saturday, March 2^nd from 1 pm to 3 pm in honor of National Read Across America Day, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts invites children to bring their favorite book to the Museum for an afternoon of reading.  Participants will meet our “staff” of puppets and read to them their stories.  Children will also get to enjoy story time for themselves with the Museum  Education staff.

New Exhibit Opening

 The Work of Play

On Tuesday, February 26^th during Regular Hours, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts will open the new exhibit The Work of Play.

This exhibit explores the multi-layered connections between leisure activities and the trades they helped to support.  For example, musical instrument makers made their living producing instruments used for entertainment at various social gatherings.  The exhibit will focus on the topics of Toys and Games, Print Culture, Music, Fashion and Taverns.  Don't miss what is sure to be a fun experience for all!
